Thirty Senators, led by Senator John Thune (R-SD), sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell expressing concern over the integrity of the scientific evidence used by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) to develop its report . The Senators took particular aim at the DGAC's decision to remove lean meat from the statement describing a healthy dietary pattern. The letter cites peer-reviewed and published scientific evidence that demonstrates the important role lean red meats play in a healthy diet, and calls the omission misleading, given that Americans are not overconsuming lean meat, based on recommendations outlined by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Senators also advocated for an extension of the 45-day comment period to provide interested individuals adequate time to carefully review and respond to the 571-page report.
