FSIS Enhances Allergen Label Monitoring

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a directive instructing inspection program personnel to verify that establishments accurately control and label the eight most common ("Big 8") food allergens. These allergens, which incllude wheat, crustacean shellfish, eggs, fish, peanuts, milk, tree nuts and soybeans, account for approximately 90 percent of food allergy reactions. FSIS will begin conducting ongoing, monthly verification task on April 12, 2015, to determine whether establishments accurately control and label the "Big 8" food allergens. The "Big 8 Formulation Verification" task in the Public Health Information System will include record review, prodcution process observation and answers to specific task-related questions.
