(North American Meat Institute)
USDA will host, on March 18, 2015, an open teleconference meeting of the Agricultural Research Service-Animal Handling and Welfare Review Panel (ARS-AHWR) to discuss its report and recommendations on animal handling and welfare policies and procedures at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) in Clay Center, Nebraska. Interested participants must preregister for the conference to access the dial-in information. Public written comments are also invited through March 18, and can be submitted via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, or mailed to REE Advisory Board Office, Jamie L. Whitten Building, Room 332A, 1400 Independence Avenue SW., Washington, DC 20250.
The panel found no evidence of poor animal handling, animal abuse or inadequate veterinary care. The panel also made seven recommendations to improve operations and ensure USMARC complies fully with ARS policies and processes, particularly those to ensure that its Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is working effectively to review and approve research programs at the USMARC.share on facebook share on twitter
