Tuesday, March 10, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)

The independent review panel convened by USDA to report on animal handling and welfare policies and procedures at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) in Clay Center, Nebraska, released a draft report of its findings and recommendations following an onsite review of the center. The panel found no evidence as part of its onsite review of poor animal handling, animal abuse or inadequate veterinary care. The panel also made seven recommendations to improve operations and ensure USMARC complies fully with Agricultural Research Service (ARS) policies and processes, particularly those to ensure that its Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is working effectively to review and approve research programs at the USMARC. Public comments are invited on the draft report through March 18, and the panel will also hold a teleconference call on March 18 to receive public input.
