Meat Institute Requests Extension to DGAC Scientific Report Comment Period

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)

NAMI sent a letter to USDA and HHS requesting an extension to the comment period for the Dietargy Guidelines Advisory Committee's (DGAC) scientific report from 45 to 120 days. In the letter, the Meat Institute notes that 45 days does not allow adequate time to thoroughly review, and provide meaningful input on, the 571-page report and the entire Nutrition Evidence Library. Last week, NAMI joined members of the Dietary Guidelines Industry Coalition in requesting the same extension to the public comment period. The public may submit written comments in response to the DGAC's scientific report through April 8, 2015. However, in a hearing before House Appropriators last week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said an additional 60 days would be granted (See Legislative Affairs section). USDA and HHS will host a public meeting on March 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to receive oral public comments. Registration for the meeting is expected to open on March 9.
