FSIS Extends Comment Period for Salmonella and Campylobacter Verification Testing

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is extending by 60 days the comment period for the Federal Register notice proposing changes to the Salmonella and Campylobacter verification testing programs and to performance standards for Salmonella and Campylobacter in Not-Ready-To-Eat (NRTE) comminuted chicken and turkey products and raw chicken parts. NAMI joined other industry groups in requesting a 90-day extension of the comment period, followed by a 90-day delay in all implementation dates for FSIS actions outlined in this notice. FSIS denied the delay in implementation dates. In March, FSIS will proceed to implement sampling of raw chicken parts to gain additional information on the prevalence and microbiological characteristics of Salmonella and Campylobacter in those products. At that time, FSIS will also begin exploratory sampling of raw pork products for pathogens of public health concern, and will begin sampling imported poultry carcasses, imported raw chicken parts and imported NRTE comminuted chicken and turkey for Salmonella and Campylobacter.
