The World Trade Organization (WTO) heard arguments in the appeal of its ruling on the U.S. country-of-origin labeling (COOL) rule. Last year, the WTO ruled in favor of Canada and Mexico, saying the U.S. COOL rule is out of compliance with its trade obligations. In a statement to Politico, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) was optimistic following oral arguments in the appeal hearing saying, "We are confident in the USDA regulation, issued in May 2013, which implements the WTO findings involving COOL." The oral statements are expected to be posted on USTR's website. The WTO will rule on the appeal later this year.
