New Video Challenges Myth About Water Use in Beef Production

NAMI and the American Meat Science Association released the newest video in the Meat Mythcrushers series addressing the common myth about the amount of water required to produce one pound of beef. The video, which marks the 41st in the series, features sustainability researcher Jude Capper, Ph.D., who notes that producing one pound of boneless beef requires 441 gallons of water-a fraction of the 2,400 gallons often claimed. This figure, Capper describes, is significantly lower than the 39,000 gallons of water required to produce one car, or the more than 700 gallons of water required to make a cotton t-shirt. Capper advises consumers interested in purchasing the most sustainable beef to opt for corn-finished, as opposed to grass-finished.
