NAMI joined 70 other food and agricultural organizations in a letter urging Congress to quickly introduce and approve legislation to renew Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), which is necessary to finalize and implement numerous trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP). The letters cited the economic benefits that resulted from previous trade agreements, noting that since 1989, U.S. agricultural exports have nearly quadrupled in value and now stand at a record $152.5 billion. Every $1 of U.S. farm exports generates an additional $1.27 of business activity and every $1 billion of agricultural exports supports 6,600 American jobs.

"Each and every one of the trade agreements that delivered remarkable achievements was made possible by the enactment of trade promotion authority bills," the organizations said. "Should Congress not pass TPA, it will signal to our TPP partners and to the world that we are turning our back on the fastest growing economic region in the world."
