FSIS Issues Notice on Verification Sampling of Domestic Beef Product

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a notice replacing expired FSIS Notice 38-13 and outlining the procedures inspection program personnel (IPP) must follow to interpret laboratory results of domestic beef advanced meat recovery (AMR) product tested for the presence of central nervous system (CNS) type tissue. The notice also provides instructions for calculating the average daily volume of beef AMR product and recording it in the Public Health Information System (PHIS); verifying labeling requirements of compliant and non-compliant beef AMR product based on the laboratory results; and documenting in PHIS the reasons beef AMR samples are not collected. FSIS will incorporate information in this notice into a future revision of an AMR directive.
