NAMI joined more than 30 U.S. food and agriculture companies and associations to launch officially the U.S. Agriculture Coalition for Cuba (USACC), which seeks to end the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba and encourage open trade and investment to re-establish Cuba as a market for U.S. food and agriculture exports. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack spoke at the event in support of the coalition's efforts, citing the removal of technical barriers and the significant economic potential for U.S. producers resulting from more open trade.

NAMI's Steven Sothmann, president of the U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association, also addressed the potential growth opportunities of the Cuban market as tourism picks up saying, "With the expected future gains in tourism and hospitality in Cuba, U.S. meat and poultry companies are in a prime position to supply those growth industries with high quality products to service foreign visitors that will be coming to the island."

The group will now focus on building Congressional support to end the embargo.
