DGAC Holds Final Meeting

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) held its seventh and final meeting on December 15 to discuss the Committee's draft report, which is expected to be submitted to the secretaries of agriculture and health and human services in early January 2015. The DGAC has recommended a dietary pattern that is in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, no- and low-fat dairy, seafood, legumes and nuts; moderate in alcohol; lower in red and processed meats; low in added sugars; and low in refined grains, stating that such a diet will promote better health outcomes. The recommendation is especially concerning as lean meats were omitted as part of a healthy dietary pattern. The DGAC has also indicated its support for a more sustainable diet, noting that the adoption of a plant-based dietary pattern is associated with fewer environmental consequences.

The final DGAC report removed language that initially called for a higher dietary intake of lean meat, and recommends lower red and processed meat consumption. In addition to limiting lean, red and processed meats, the report recommends that daily sodium intake not exceed 2,300 mg and that saturated fat constitute no more than 10 percent of total daily calories. Public comments are invited on this report until December 30, 2014, after which a Federal Register notice will be published announcing the final report's availability, followed by a 45-day comment period. USDA and HHS will use the DGAC's report to produce the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which sets federal nutrition guidance, and is expected to be released in late 2015.
