Dietary Guidelines Committee Still has Questions Regarding Red and Processed Meats in Final Public Webinar

At press time, the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's final public webinar was in progress and many questions surround the eating patterns, research and the draft recommendations regarding red and processed meats. Conflicting draft recommendations of lower consumption of red and processed meats as well as no clear definition of lean confounded the committee. After significant discussion, the committee decided to refer the issues back to its respective subcommittee for further discussion. After the lunch break, the committee removed lean meats as associated with positive health outcomes from draft conclusion, while keeping the recommendation of "lowering red and processed meats consumption." The committee continues its deliberations and a summary of the Committee meeting will be made available to members.
