AMI and NAMA Join Group on Mixed Dishes Comments to DGAC

AMI, NAMA, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and others submitted comments to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) on the important nutritional value of mixed dishes in the American diet. Mixed dishes include omelets, sandwiches, frozen entrees, stir-fries, pasta dishes and soups that include foods from different dietary categories.

The comments encourage USDA and HHS to frame nutritional policy around a total diet approach to healthy eating, which highlights moderation, variety and calorie balance rather than focusing on nutrients or foods to limit or encourage. The organizations also contend the objectives of the DGAC will be best achieved by not restricting mixed dishes, but providing guidance on portion control and how to create and choose healthier products. The organizations assert mixed dishes can play an important role in a healthy, well-balanced diet.
