Blog Highlights Dietary Guidelines Mediterranean Diet Conundrum

(American Meat Institute)

AMI highlighted on its blog  a surprising contradiction from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC). Throughout their deliberations, the DGAC has cited the Mediterranean diet as a healthful option, while pushing for a recommendation to limit red and processed meat. A closer look at the data presented in the meeting shows that Mediterranean diet followers eat twice as much red and processed meat as the USDA dietary pattern. In the blog, AMI questions why the DGAC is ignoring this fact and other data that shows protein is currently consumed in the proper amounts and questions whether the committee is fulfilling its mission.
