USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) insisted to Politico that a rule requiring labeling for mechanically tenderized beef will be final by the end of the year. The comment followed letters from Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and consumer groups urging FSIS to finalize the rule. Under the current timeframe for implementation, labels finalized by the end of the year will go into effect on January 1, 2016. Any labels finalized after December 31, 2014 become effective in 2018.
