FSIS Reissues Two Notices

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reissued two notices related to testing for adulterants. FSIS Notice 56-14, "Control of Agency Tested Products for Adulterants," informs inspection program personnel (IPP) and Enforcement Investigation and Analysis Officers (EIAOs) to verify that establishments hold or control product when FSIS tests samples for adulterants. IPP are also reminded to record this information in the Public Health Information System (PHIS) at the time of sample collection. The instructions in this notice apply to: raw beef product tested for E. coli O157:H7 or shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC); ready-to-eat (RTE) products tested forListeria monocytogenes or Salmonella; livestock carcasses subject to testing under the National Residue Program (NRP); and products tested under the Verification of Non-Food Safety Consumer Protection Regulatory Requirements directive.

FSIS Notice 57-14, "Control of Products Offered for Import That are Tested by FSIS for Adulterants," reminds import inspection personnel conducting a laboratory sample type of inspection for an adulterant to notify the import establishment management and to inquire whether the importer of record (IOR) will hold the sample lot on-site at the official import establishment or off-site under the IOR's control.
