Coalition Urges Congress to Take Action on COOL

On Thursday, October 30, a coalition of 109 companies and organizations, including AMI and the North American Meat Association, sent a letter to all Members of Congress stating that it is unacceptable for the United States to be out of compliance with our trade obligations and to request Congress to take action. The letter follows the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Compliance Panel report of October 20, which determined that the COOL statute and regulations violate WTO rules.

Earlier in the week, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) was quoted in CQ's Agriculture & Food blog (subscription required) as saying that COOL is "certainly something we will be working on" during lame duck, and that we need to bring the industry, Canadians and others together to "see if we can't find a reasonable path...."

Previously, longtime COOL defender Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) was quoted in the Hagstrom Report (October 20) as stating, "After two negative findings from the WTO, with the second WTO ruling saying that the revised rule from the U.S. Department of Agriculture was actually worse than the original rule, it's likely time for Congress to go back to the drawing board."
