U.S. Consumers Prefer Animal Protein Sources

According to a recent report released by NPD Group, a global information company, half of U.S. consumers consider animal protein to be the best source of dietary protein. Beef and chicken topped the list of consumer protein preferences, followed by fish, pork, ham, shellfish, lamb and bacon. The report also found that more than three-fourths of consumers agree protein contributes to a healthy diet, and more than 60 percent of Americans eat animal protein on a typical day. To better define protein consumers, the NPD report segments them into three categories: Traditional Protein Purists, Flexible Protein Users and Knowledgeable but Indifferent. Of the three groups, Traditional Protein Purists are more likely to consume animal proteins over alternative sources, and these individuals are also more likely to have meals that are balanced with vegetables and grains.
