AMI Highlights Key Industry Issues at T-TIP Stakeholder Forum

AMI Interim President and CEO Jim Hodges discussed opportunities and challenges related to meat and poultry trade issues at a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP) forum in Fairfax, VA. The forum was held in conjunction with the fifth round of T-TIP negotiations between the U.S. and European Union (E.U.).  

In his remarks, Hodges stressed the importance of comprehensive, “single undertaking” negotiations where all sectors and chapters are finalized concurrently. He also reiterated the need for science based decision making, not the precautionary principle or cultural preferences, as part of the deal and specified concerns over the E.U.’s ban on U.S. beef raised with growth promoting technologies.

In addition, Hodges called for the elimination of all E.U. import duties in the shortest time possible and increased access for U.S. pork and poultry products.

The stakeholder summit was organized by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The fifth round of T-TIP negotiations will conclude Friday.
