231 House Members Urge EPA to Stop Clean Water Expansion.Tuesday, May 6, 2014
(American Meat Institute)
Last Thursday, 231 members of the House of Representatives wrote the administration with a request to drop its plans to expand the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) jurisdiction over smaller bodies of water around the country. The letter, led by Chris Collins (R-NY) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR), criticized the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers proposed Waters of the United States rule released last month. The proposed regulation expands which bodies of water the agencies can regulate under the Clean Water Act (CWA). Both agencies are seeking a rule change to give the federal government more authority by expanding the already overly broad definition of 'navigable waters' under the CWA and would include smaller wetlands and streams. AMI was happy to assist in the letter effort and to share concerns about the negative impact the proposed rule will have on farms all across the country. A copy of the Congressional letter may be viewed here.
