EPA Issues Final Rule on Tolerance Exception for Lactic Acid Residues.

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

(North American Meat Institute)The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week issued a final rule in response to a petition submitted by Ecolab Inc. requesting an exemption from the requirement of a tolerance for lactic acid residues. The EPA agreed with the petition and established an exemption from the requirement of a tolerance for residues of lactic acid when used as an inert ingredient (acidifier) on food-contact surfaces in public eating places, dairy processing equipment, food-processing equipment and utensils at 10,000 parts per million. This regulation eliminates the need to establish a maximum permissible level for residues of lactic acid when used under the terms specified in the regulation. The regulation is effective as of July 26, 2019, and objections and requests for hearings must be received by Sept. 24, 2019. The final rule can be found here.
