The House Committee on Appropriations marked-up the fiscal year (FY) 2020 Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration funding bill last week. This appropriations bill funds the FDA and USDA. During the mark-up, the Committee passed an amendment by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) that would delay USDA from finalizing the New Swine Inspection System proposed rule. The night before the markup, the Meat Institute learned that Rep. DeLauro planned to offer her amendment, and sent a letter - signed by the American Farm Bureau Federation and National Pork Producers Council - urging House Appropriators to oppose any amendment that would delay the New Swine Inspection System. The FY 2020 Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration funding bill is expected to face a vote in the House next week, as a part of a five-bill funding package. The Senate has not yet begun their appropriations process.
