Japan Ends Longstanding Trade Restrictions on American Beef

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced that Japan agreed to eliminate longstanding restrictions on U.S. beef exports, including the 30-month cattle age limit for the first time since 2003. The new terms, which take effect immediately, allow U.S. products from all cattle, regardless of age, to enter Japan, according to USDA's announcement. The U.S. Meat Export Federation estimates that expanded access without the age restrictions could increase U.S. beef sales to Japan as much as 10%, or $200 million annually.

"The Meat Institute commends U.S. and Japanese leaders for affirming the importance of science-based trade rules and removing these non-tariff trade barriers, Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts wrote in a press release. "This is an important step to ensure continued access to a vital market."
